The elites of the collective West stubbornly fail to see that the war Putin started three years ago on Ukrainian soil isn’t just aggression against Kyiv and Ukrainians—it’s a war against the United States and NATO. The ultimatum Russia issued on December 17, 2021, was directed at them, demanding a brazen restoration of Moscow’s control over former Warsaw Pact countries.
Judging by the arrogance displayed by Putin and Russian diplomats, they were confident, on the eve of their aggression against the West, that they could swiftly and effortlessly conquer Ukraine. After that, they planned to mobilize all of Ukraine’s resources and population to continue the assault on NATO’s eastern flank. This explains the audacious and arrogant tone with which Putin and his foreign ministry addressed the West’s elites.
NATO SHOULD PACK ITS BAGS…
“NATO should 'pack up’ and retreat to pre-1997 borders.” This was the brazen statement made by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov on the eve of U.S.-Russia talks in Geneva, which took place on January 10, 2022. The high-ranking Russian diplomat declared that “NATO will no longer be able to push Russia to the sidelines of European and international politics.”
“We were deceived! Brazenly deceived! Five waves of NATO expansion, and now appropriate systems are appearing in Romania and Poland. You ask for guarantees [of non-aggression]. It’s you who should be providing us with guarantees. Immediately! Now! And not just discussing it for decades,” thundered Putin at a press conference on December 23, 2021, referring to the ultimatum on so-called “security guarantees” published five days earlier by Russia’s foreign ministry.
After the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, Russia and other countries of the so-called “axis of evil” became convinced that the United States and the entire West were no longer a military force capable of defending their interests and allies across continents. When Putin ordered his diplomats to prepare an ultimatum for Washington and Brussels, he was confident the West would start backing down and appease Moscow.
PUTIN’S DREAM: NATO’S COLLAPSE
Putin expected the West, shocked by his audacity, to recognize Russia’s right to reclaim its Stalinist sphere of influence and to grant the Kremlin veto power over NATO expansion, leading ultimately to the alliance’s collapse. Putin anticipated a timid response and deepening divisions within NATO countries, but he was severely mistaken. Detached from reality, the Kremlin dreamer was gravely disappointed when his arrogant demands were firmly rejected.
“We will not agree that NATO cannot expand further; we will not agree to revert to 1997,” stated U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman during a press conference in Brussels after NATO-Russia talks in January 2022. Later, in response to Moscow’s demands, the United States and NATO provided Russia with a written reply, categorically rejecting Putin’s outrageous claims.
PUTIN REACTED WITH FURIOUS HYSTERIA
“Russia’s core concerns were ignored… We did not see an adequate consideration of our three main demands: halting NATO’s expansion, a commitment not to deploy strike weapon systems near Russian borders, and a rollback of the bloc’s military infrastructure in Europe to its 1997 state, when the NATO-Russia Founding Act was signed. As we know, we were promised that NATO’s infrastructure would not move one inch eastward. Everyone is aware of this… Today, look where NATO is—Poland, Romania, the Baltic states,” fumed the irritated Kremlin leader in response to the written replies received on January 26 from the U.S. and NATO.
The underlying theme of these grievances is the false claim that, during Germany’s reunification 30 years ago, then-U.S. Secretary of State James Baker promised that NATO wouldn’t expand eastward, allegedly deceiving Moscow. Although the USSR’s first and last president, Mikhail Gorbachev, firmly denied this outright lie, the Kremlin leader has no qualms about spreading this disinformation at every opportunity.
MOSCOW’S GOAL: DESTABILIZING AND CONQUERING EUROPE
In other words, the Kremlin dictator dares to demand veto power over the expansion of the North Atlantic Alliance—the only guarantor of peace, stability, and security in Europe that effectively hinders Russia from destabilizing the continent.
Putin seeks to challenge the subsequent rounds of NATO expansion eastward that have prevented Moscow from destabilizing and inciting open military conflicts in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, the Baltic states, and Eastern Balkans. In contrast, Russia has successfully waged wars in neighboring countries—Moldova, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Ukraine—that haven’t joined NATO.
Nikolai Patrushev, Putin’s friend and colleague, as well as the chief hawk and ideologue of Russia’s war against Western civilization, admitted in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta that the Kremlin regime seeks to destroy Euro-Atlantic unity and push the U.S. out of Europe to seize control over the continent. “The U.S. dominates Europe, ignoring the fact that Russia historically plays the leading role on the continent. In the 19th century, it was the Russian Empire, in the 20th century, the Soviet Union. And it will remain that way in the 21st century,” he revealed, disclosing Kremlin plans that have been kept secret for decades.
PUTIN’S PLANS TO ATTACK POLAND
Reports have increasingly surfaced about Putin’s plans to attack Poland and the Baltic states. According to secret Russian FSB documents leaked in early March 2023 by one of Britain’s most popular newspapers, The Sun, Putin, prior to his large-scale invasion of Ukraine, believed the Russian army would capture Kyiv in no time. He expected the West, alarmed by Ukraine’s rapid collapse, to beg him “not to harm them.” He foresaw NATO’s disintegration, with some former alliance members even willing to tolerate missile attacks on Poland and the Baltic states. To achieve such a result, Russia would have to blackmail the world with nuclear threats.
If it weren’t for the fierce fight Ukrainians are waging for freedom and independence, Putin might have already penned an article titled “A Chicken Is No Bird, and Poland Is No Foreign Land: On the Slavic Unity of Russians and the People of the Russian Vistula Land,” with all the consequences that would follow.
NO FREE UKRAINE, NO FREE POLAND, OR FREE EUROPE
For now, Ukraine is preventing the realization of these insane plans. Without conquering Ukraine, the Kremlin dictator will not be able to destabilize Central and Eastern Europe or rebuild the Russian Empire.
“Without Ukraine, Russia ceases to be a Eurasian empire. However, if Moscow regains control over Ukraine, along with its millions of citizens, vast natural resources, and access to the Black Sea, it will automatically regain the potential to become a powerful empire bridging Europe and Asia. Ukraine’s loss of independence would have immediate consequences for Central Europe, turning Poland into the geopolitical pivot on the eastern border of a united Europe,” wrote Zbigniew Brzezinski, the distinguished American geostrategist and diplomat of Polish descent.
This is why Putin is obsessed with Ukraine; he understands that without it, he cannot destabilize Central and Eastern Europe or rebuild the Russian Empire. With full responsibility and without the slightest exaggeration, we can say that the fate of Europe and Western civilization is being decided today in Ukraine.
Today, thanks to brave Ukrainian soldiers, Europeans enjoy peace and calm. As long as Ukrainians hold back the advance of Eurasian barbarians, Europe remains relatively safe. Their courage and determination form a shield that protects our continent from chaos and aggression. The war in Ukraine is our war!
